Safeguarding and Prevent

What is Safeguarding?

Safeguarding is a term used in the United Kingdom and Ireland to denote measures to protect the health, well-being and human rights of individuals, which allow people — especially children, young people and vulnerable adults — to live free from abuse, harm and neglect.

How do I report a Welfare, Safeguarding or Prevent Concern?

To report a Welfare, Safeguarding or Prevent Concern please contact our Designated Safeguarding Lead on 07593 703281 (Mon-Fri 9-5) or email safe@training-works.co.uk

For Safeguarding or Prevent Concerns out of working hours please call The Samaritans on 116 123 or in an emergency please dial 999.

What is Prevent?

Prevent is about safeguarding people and communities from the threat of terrorism. Prevent is 1 of the 4 elements of CONTEST, the Government’s counter-terrorism strategy. It aims to stop people becoming terrorists or supporting terrorism.

Prevent is one part of the United Kingdom’s counter terrorism strategy (CONTEST) and aims to stop people from being exposed to extreme ideologies or becoming involved in or supporting terrorist activity. It is an approach that involves many agencies and communities, to safeguard people who may be at risk of radicalisation.

The Prevent strategy covers all types of extremism, both domestic violent and non-violent extremism, including the extreme right wing, Islamist militantism and other causes.

Types of harm that are covered by the terms of Safeguarding and Prevent:

  • Physical
  • Emotional or Psychological
  • Neglect
  • Sexual Abuse or Exploitation
  • Financial Exploitation
  • Cyber Bullying
  • Grooming
  • Radicalisation

Indication of harm could be:

  • Wariness and distrust
  • Inconsistent explanation of injuries
  • Self-esteem issues / being withdrawn / Suicidal
    feelings / difficulty concentrating
  • Aggressive behaviour
  • Alcohol or drug abuse
  • Reluctance to go home
  • Downloading or promotion of extremist content
  • Becoming more argumentative/domineering in their
    viewpoints
  • Questioning own faith and identity

Factors contributing to harm could be:

  • Isolation and lack of family support
  • Stress
  • Drug and alcohol problems
  • Low self-esteem and self-confidence issues
  • Bad childhood experiences
  • Identity Crisis
  • A need of adventure or excitement

What do we do if harm or danger is suspected?

Employees working closely with young or vulnerable learners should be alert to the possibilities of harm in and/or out of the workplace. It is the duty of staff to inform the Designated Safeguarding Lead, who will make the decide whether to involve a third party.

If an employer, Apprentice or any member of staff, has a safeguarding concern brought to their attention, it will be reported to the Safeguarding Team at Training Works as a matter of urgency.

Our Designated Safeguarding Lead will review the concern and action will be taken within 24 Hours.
